Workplace Summary

Most workplace activities can be broken down into tasks. Even a large project that takes many years to complete is a series of small tasks. While people may not like their work described as tasks, and especially small tasks; the concept makes work manageable. It also allows replacing groups of tasks with different groups of tasks, if it becomes necessary, in a more meaningful format.

This means that a job role can be summarized with the question "What type of tasks do you do for work?". The perceptions of a job role or title can be similarly assessed with the question "What type of tasks do you expect to do in this job role?". Tasks make decisions more data driven when measuring job performance.

  • Was the task completed?
  • How long did it take?
  • Was this faster or slower than other people completing the same task?
  • On average, how long does it take to complete this task?
  • Was this faster or slower than the averages?
  • What was the quality like, based on requirements?
  • Where policies and procedures followed in completing the task?

Workplaces are changing and people rarely stay in the same job for more than 5 years. People today go through new job training every few years or are skilled at multiple job roles that they allocate on a schedule. Those skilled in multiple roles, normally work independently, in management, or supervisory positions. Still, they often divide their work into tasks which may be spread out over several time allocations on a schedule. Businesses must make sure that the resulting set of tasks are well described so that their business can continue to operate with new workers.

Management teams can help with easing workplace transitions, measuring performance, assessing new workers, and creating agreements with independent workers. This is also, a set of tasks that can be measured and compared for meeting requirements and expectations or neeeding improvement.
