There are not many situations where emotions aren't part of human interactions. Being declined for an offer to work, having a younger supervisor, having a co-worker that is not up to date on any developing processes, being arrested by the school bully or the high school dweeb. Almost any situation where two humans are interacting with one another can lead to loss of emotional control or may pose a risk of emotional aggravation, or feelings of being distraught.
Providing counseling is often much more than suggestions for a situation. Its not necessarily focused on achieving or overcoming, the focus is often on assessment of an environment and making healthy choices within that context. It can focus on support, reflection, evaluation, outcomes, comfort, and resources. The goal is to help the person think through their own thoughts and to have a reference as to why they made certain decisions. It can also help with evaluating emotional distress from decisions that did not work out well for them.
